About CSMGEP

The Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession (CSMGEP) was established by the American Economic Association (AEA) in 1968 to increase the representation of minorities in the economics profession, primarily by broadening opportunities for the training of underrepresented minorities. Comprised of economists from all areas of the profession, the CSMGEP Board works to ensure that issues related to the representation of minorities are considered in the work of the AEA and engages in other efforts to promote the advancement of minorities in the economics profession.

CSMGEP collaborates with the American Society of Hispanic Economists (ASHE), the Association for Economic Research of Indigenous People (AERIP), and the National Economic Association (NEA) to produce The Minority Report, an annual newsletter highlighting the work of the committee and its partner organizations.

CSMGEP coordinates several valuable networking and professional development programs each year, including the AEA Summer Training Program for undergraduates preparing for doctoral programs in economics, the Mentoring Program for students accepted or enrolled in a PhD program in economics, and the Summer Economics Fellows Program for women and underrepresented minorities in economics. The AEA welcomes contributions to keep these programs successful.

Through a variety of initiatives, CSMGEP and the AEA actively recognize and support diversity and inclusion across the economics profession. These awards and opportunities include the AEA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Diversity and Inclusion, Departmental Seed Grants for Innovation in Diversity and Inclusion, the Andrew Brimmer Undergraduate Essay Prize, URM Travel Grants, Small Group Breakfasts for URM Scholars, and a Professional Development Grant for URM Faculty.
