Expanding Diversity in Undergraduate Classes with Advancements in (the) Teaching (of) Economics (EDUCATE) Workshop. The Committee on Economic Education is pleased to announce that the annual EDUCATE workshop will be held in conjunction with the AEA 2023 CTREE in Portland, Oregon. The workshop will be in-person with supporting structures and materials facilitated through Canvas beginning Friday, June 2, 2023, and concluding on Sunday, June 4, 2023. Visit EDUCATE Workshop for details. The application portal for the 2023 workshop is open, with a rolling acceptance procedure that continues until all workshop slots are filled.

The twelfth annual AEA Conference on Teaching and Research in Economic Education (CTREE) will be held on May 31 – June 2, 2023, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Portland, Oregon. The conference is hosted by the Committee on Economic Education in conjunction with the Journal of Economic Education. Plenary talks will be given by Julie Barry Cullen (University of California, San Diego), Jason F. Shogren (University of Wyoming), and Mary Daly (President, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco). The Committee on Economic Education will sponsor a poster session at the 2024 ASSA Meeting devoted to active learning strategies across the economics curriculum. Instead of papers, session presenters will prepare large visual poster summaries of their work, which will be mounted in an exhibition room to allow presenters to talk directly with session participants. Although the committee encourages presenters to include evidence that their strategy enhances learning, it does not require quantifiable evidence. Presenters should emphasize the originality of their strategy and provide sufficient information so that session participants may apply the technique in their own classrooms. Proposals should describe the teaching strategy and explain how it will be displayed on the poster. Posters marketing textbooks, commercial software, or similar materials will not be considered for the session.  Proposals are limited to two pages and are due by April 30. The AEA Mentoring Program (AEAMP) aims to enhance diversity in the economics profession by increasing the participation and representation of traditionally underrepresented groups. The AEAMP matches doctoral students and new PhDs in economics with mentors in the field and facilitates networking between mentees and professional economists (both inside and outside of academia). Formerly known as the Pipeline Program, the AEAMP was established in the mid-1990s to address the underrepresentation of racial/ethnic minority groups among those entering and completing doctoral degree programs in economics. The AEAMP will host the 2023 AEA Summer Mentoring Pipeline Conference (Washington, D.C., June 16-17, 2023) and will also organize an AEAMP session at the annual WEAI conference (San Diego, July 2-6, 2023) featuring research by AEAMP mentees.  The Program will also host its annual Virtual Job Market Bootcamp in the fall of 2023 and continue to provide funding to support the research and travel of the mentees, including participation at national conferences.  If you are interested in participating in the program (either as a mentee or mentor) please visit https://www.aeaweb.org/about-aea/committees/csmgep/mentoring and contact AEAMentoring@gmail.com with any questions.

The Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) will host a Networking Luncheon at the 2023 Midwestern Economics Association (MEA) annual meeting in Cleveland, Ohio. The Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession (CSMGEP) will sponsor a dissertation session at the AEA meetings next year (January 5-7, 2024) in San Antonio, Texas. This is a great opportunity for exposure and feedback for graduate students from underrepresented minority groups (Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American) who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Nominees should be close to finishing their dissertations but have not yet secured post-degree employment. Participants will present their work in the CSMGEP dissertation session. CSMGEP will directly pay for each presenter’s airfare, hotel accommodations, and conference registration fees associated with attending the meetings. Note that papers presented at the AEA must have at least one coauthor who is an AEA member, but individuals may become members upon notification of selection for participation in the CSMGEP dissertation session. If you would like to nominate a graduate student for participation in the dissertation session, please send the student’s name and e-mail address to Rodney Andrews at rodney.j.andrews@utdallas.edu. Nominations (including self-nominations) will be accepted until Friday, May 19, 2023.
